A study published in the April issue of the British Medical Journal suggests that a new cholesterol-lowering drug may be able to halt the heart's ability to pump blood through the placenta and lungs. It's a potentially effective treatment for heart disease.
Crestor, known generically as rosuvastatin, belongs to a class of drugs called statins. These drugs lower cholesterol by blocking the action of certain enzymes in the body that produce high levels of LDL and triglycerides in the blood. They are available as a generic or as an oral tablet.
Researchers reviewed the data of the study, which involved 11,366 women, with type 2 diabetes who took statins for a period of eight to 10 years. They compared the results of 10 different studies of rosuvastatin. They looked at how the drug affected the blood levels of the participants. Results were mixed, with a large number of women showing a decrease in the amount of LDL from their baseline. For women with a history of heart disease, the mean decrease in LDL from baseline was 8.1 (SD 6.3) and for those who had a history of diabetes, the mean decrease was 10.2 (SD 6.6).
Women taking rosuvastatin saw no changes in their cholesterol levels at all.
The findings were "compelling," said, an assistant professor of clinical and epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a leading researcher on the effects of statins on cardiovascular disease. Rosuvastatin is available in generic form.
Dr. Steven Nissen of the Cleveland Clinic, who led the study, said the new study was an important first step. He said the findings are consistent with earlier studies that suggest that rosuvastatin may improve heart disease risk and may be a new option for patients.
"This is a significant advance over more recent studies that are focused on a particular population, but it is still promising," Nissen said.
The study did not directly compare rosuvastatin with other statins, which are often used for lower cholesterol. Instead, the researchers focused on the use of rosuvastatin in combination with a beta-blocker, a statin often used to treat high cholesterol.
"The combination of rosuvastatin and a beta-blocker is an effective treatment," said Nissen. "The fact that rosuvastatin had a lower dose compared with other statins suggests that there is a benefit to combining it with a beta-blocker in the treatment of cardiovascular disease."
A different study in the British Medical Journal, published in June 2011, showed that combining rosuvastatin with a beta-blocker can help reduce the risk of heart attacks.
"We are taking the opportunity to take a closer look at this potential benefit," said Nissen. "This study suggests that there may be a beneficial effect with combination therapy in patients with high-risk coronary artery disease who are not at risk for stroke, coronary heart disease, or heart attack."
The study, which was reviewed by researchers at the American Heart Association, showed that statins can help reduce the risk of heart attack, strokes, and even heart attacks by up to 90 percent. In addition, it showed that a combination of rosuvastatin and a beta-blocker such as atorvastatin may be more effective than either medication alone in patients with high-risk coronary artery disease. The combination was also more likely to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke by 50 percent, compared with those who did not take a statin.
"The study is also a welcome sign that the benefits of statins might be more widespread," said Nissen. "It could be used as a preventive measure in patients who have low LDL cholesterol and who are at high risk for heart disease, or as a treatment option to improve overall cardiovascular health."
The study also revealed that statins may have the potential to improve the ability of the heart to pump blood through the placenta and lungs. While rosuvastatin was found to reduce the amount of blood flowing through the placenta, the researchers cautioned that there was no clear evidence that it could improve the placenta's ability to pump blood.
"We need to make a more careful approach to the use of this drug in women with coronary artery disease," said Nissen. "We do not know the exact mechanism by which this drug could work in women with coronary artery disease."
Rosuvastatin has a number of other effects on the body.
